Sight Translation Workshop (July 27, 2024)

This workshop suits practitioners and students preparing for the NAATI Certified Interpreter Sight Translation tasks, or seeking to improve their Sight Translation skills.

Overview:

Interpreters working in community settings need to have the skills to produce a fluent oral translation of written texts. Sight translation (ST) involves a double conversion, that is from one language to another and from written text into oral discourse for the listener to be able to follow comfortably (Setton & Dawrant, 2016). Learning to do it well takes practice.

This workshop builds on the self-paced online ‘Introduction to Sight Translation’ course and aims to strengthen the participants’ understanding of the challenges involved in producing a good sight translation. Learners will focus on developing skills for producing a sight translation that is faithful to the original and easy for the listener to follow. They will practise ST skills through exercises involving typical texts and will self-assess their performance.
