Working with Interpreters – JCDI eLearning Videos

A valuable resource for the justice and interpreting sectors

The Judicial Council on Diversity and Inclusion (JCDI) has developed the Working with Interpreters for Judicial Officers and Tribunal Members eLearning course to support effective and appropriate engagement with interpreters in Australian courts and tribunals.

The course draws on the Recommended National Standards for Working with Interpreters in Courts and Tribunals and provides practical guidance on working effectively with interpreters within judicial and tribunal settings.

Why this may also be useful for interpreters

Although the eLearning course has been developed primarily for judicial officers and tribunal members, the accompanying videos may also be valuable professional learning resources for interpreters, particularly those working—or seeking to work—in legal and judicial settings.

For interpreters, the videos provide an opportunity to better understand:

  • how judicial officers and tribunal members are being encouraged to work with interpreters;
  • expectations surrounding the respective roles of interpreters and judicial officers;
  • communication practices that support accurate and effective interpreting;
  • the application of the Recommended National Standards in courts and tribunals; and
  • the broader importance of professional interpreting to procedural fairness and access to justice.

Understanding the perspective of the professionals with whom interpreters work can contribute to stronger preparation, clearer professional boundaries and more effective interpreted proceedings.
