Interactional Management for Remote Interpreting Webinar (July 28, 2025)
Overview:
Interpreting in community settings is rarely limited to straightforward relaying of messages from one language to another. Interpreters working onsite as well as remotely are required to also manage the interaction to maintain accuracy and the optimum flow of the communication between the primary parties. In remote interpreting assignments, communication management tends to be more frequent and more complex due to technology issues and lack of visual access.
This webinar aims to provide interpreters with strategies for how to best manage the beginning of the encounter, the turn taking during phone and video assignments and closing the encounter. We will cover the following topics:
- Defining interaction management in community interpreting
- Situations when managing communication is required
- Differences between managing discourse in onsite and remote appointments
- Strategies for setting up remote interpreting encounters
- Skills for managing turn taking, interruptions and asides effectively and appropriately in remote interpreting assignments
- Interaction management dos and don’ts
- Closing remote interpreting assignments appropriately.
