Translators

Loyalty and Fidelity in Translation

5/5

Description

When a translation is commissioned in a professional context, and because the translator is one agent among several others in the translational act, the concepts of loyalty and fidelity of the translator may be raised. But what do they really cover and entail? What constraints and considerations do professional translators have to deal with when deciding on a translation strategy to complete their work?

Who would this be useful for?

T&I practitioners and users of T&I services who have an interest in understanding what a translator’s job entails, who the different participants in the translational process are, and what elements professional translators have to juggle with when making choices and deciding on strategies.

This course will cover the following items:

An overview of the translator’s job

Concepts of loyalty, mediation, trust

Concepts of fidelity, equivalence, untranslatability

Many real-life examples to discuss the translator’s leeway
