Translating Regulatory Texts – Introduction to Community Translation

5/5

Description

This course will provide a theoretical introduction to intercultural mediation in (community) translation, followed by a discussion of different scenarios and contents that might be culturally sensitive to translate in a multilingual society. Case studies will range from unimportant in-text references or examples, which can easily be substituted/adapted to cater for the new readership, to entire texts that address culturally sensitive issues (e.g. LGBT rights, sexual abuse, domestic violence, religious freedom, strong language in political discourse, etc.). Naturally, the topic of this course will require further discussion of the translator’s professional ethics, role, ideology, and (professional, cultural and social) identity.

Who would this be useful for?

This course welcomes translators at all levels, from those without formal training to experienced professionals seeking to refresh their knowledge in community translation practices and strategies.
