This short course aims to alert translators to the specificities and problem areas associated with specific community languages in terms of structure, textual conventions and sociolinguistic factors. In addition to problem areas in the English language (e.g., polysemy, pre-modification, relative clauses), examples will be provided in Arabic and Spanish (the facilitator’s working languages in addition to English). Differences between Chinese and English, especially in relation to information structure, will also be used to illustrate language issues that might impact on the quality of translations. Participants with other working languages will be encouraged to provide and discuss examples of structural, lexical and textual differences between those languages.
