Translating Personal Official Documents – Introduction to Community Translation

This course will open with a rationale for inclusion of the translation of personal official documents (e.g. civil registry certificates, driver’s licence, academic qualifications, etc.). Although these documents fall under the category of administrative or legal texts, their translations are often part of the language services offered to migrants, refugees and other minority group members to facilitate their access to services and their social integration. The course will summarise the literature available (e.g. Mayoral Asensio, 2014; Taibi and Ozolins, 2022) about the specific nature, features and challenges of such documents. It will then provide practical instructions about how to approach the translation of such documents, in terms of accuracy, language appropriateness, document security and presentation.

Translating Public Messaging – Introduction to Community Translation

This short course will be the first one to deal with the practicalities of how community translators are expected to deal with different text types. Rather than classify texts into informative, expressive or operative only (Reiss, 2000), it will draw a distinction between two broad categories of ‘community texts’: ‘public messaging’ texts, which are usually informative and/or operative texts aiming to raise awareness, and ‘regulatory texts’, whose aim is to regulate rights, eligibility, services, relationships and so on. This will describe the main features of public messaging, especially in the healthcare sector, and provide step-by-step guidance to future community translators in relation to the identification of such texts, their function(s) within institutional communication strategies, appropriate translation strategies for them, and the translator’s communication and negotiation with other stakeholders to ensure translation transparency and appropriateness.

Translating Regulatory Texts – Introduction to Community Translation

This engaging course will focus on the translation of 'regulatory texts' – documents written from an institutional perspective to regulate rights, services, and relationships between public services and citizens or residents. Unlike specialized legal texts, contracts, or agreements, this course will concentrate on legislative or institutional texts intended for the general public, such as those related to elections, welfare benefits, and school governance structures. Participants will delve into the nature of these texts, exploring the concept of institutional translation and “government by translation” (Koskinen, 2014). The course will also include a brief discussion on the ethics of translating these types of texts. While the translations covered in the "Translating Public Messaging – Introduction to Community Translation" course are clearly communicative and reader-oriented, those in this course may cater more to the official voice and power structures. This raises important questions for community translators about their roles and loyalties. As communication mediators, community translators often face a loyalty paradox where serving one party faithfully may impact the trust of other parties (Taibi and Ozolins, 2016). This short course aims to equip translators with the skills and knowledge to navigate these complexities, ensuring effective and ethical translation practices.
